“You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret, all the best people are” Alice in Wonderland.
The underlying story, the one about a girl maturing away from home in what seems to be a world ruled by chaos and nonsense, is quite a frightening one. All the time, Alice finds herself confronted in different situations involving various different and curious animals being all alone. She hasn’t got any help at all from home or the world outside of Wonderland. Carroll is an expert at puns and irony. The part with the mad tea-party is one of the best examples of this.
The theme with Alice growing and shrinking into different sizes could reflect the ups and downs of adolescence with young people sometimes feeling adult and sometimes quite the opposite. The hesitation so typical of adolescent girls is reflected in Alice’s thoughts: “She generally gave herself good advice (though she very seldom followed it).” Many short comments point to teenage recklessness, restlessness and anxiety in all its different forms.
When Chef Maurice presented this theme to Bliss, we were utterly excited. We were asked to make the mad hatter afternoon tea party come alive for Easter weekend. It was such an out of the ordinary and quirky theme. Our first task was to prepare a mood board and concept. Maurice and his team wanted everything to be mismatched out of proportion and loud.
Our production house started to prepare for this. One of the first tasks was to create a 3 foot clock. The clock face and arms were also prepared by Bliss carpentry. All outdoor areas were to receive a bunting made of custom designed playing cards (and there were jokers too)
The photobooth had to be the most impactful as it’s the first thing you set your eyes on when you enter the lotus lounge at Anantara. Details such as the 10/6 on the oversized purple hat we created. All areas were decorated with colorful large teacups stacked and put in all odd positions.
The huge gold keys we created were apparently a hit with everyone trying to pose with them. We think the mad hatter would have been extremely proud of our creations. Mr. Mad Hatter, we love your craziness!!
